For a dog who prefers a little more breathing room, the City on a quiet morning can feel completely different. And if your dog is older, nervous or simply happiest somewhere familiar, Christmas does not have to mean central London at all. A favourite walk, a warm home afterwards and their favourite people may be exactly their idea of a perfect festive day. I have spent enough mornings on that stretch of Westminster to know how the light moves around the clock tower, which viewpoints become busy first and how dramatically the photograph can change simply by moving a few metres. It is a kind of familiarity you cannot fake and do not get from a single visit. Westminster has become the backdrop I reach for when a dog needs a portrait that says London without any doubt at all. There is the unmistakable silhouette of Big Ben, the beautiful stone of the Houses of Parliament, Westminster Bridge and the river only moments away. Yet for somewhere containing some of the most recognised architecture in the world, it can still give us photographs that feel surprisingly personal. Even with a landmark as recognisable as Big Ben behind them, the photograph should still feel completely like them. London gives us the setting; their character is what makes it theirs. Perhaps they are watching their person from across the pavement, or giving that tiny sideways glance they always do. Perhaps sitting beautifully beneath Big Ben suddenly becomes considerably less interesting than investigating something on the ground. Those are often the moments I remember. The scale of Westminster gives a portrait grandeur, while the river, open sky and changing morning light bring a warmth that pure architecture does not always have. Wide stretches of stone, enormous columns, arches, long sightlines and a real sense of London's history give these photographs a wonderful sense of occasion. They also give us space. That is particularly useful with dogs because I rarely want every photograph to be perfectly posed and still. A dog walking beside their person, turning back towards us or suddenly breaking into a little run can tell me far more about them than asking for another sit. The architecture here can be incredibly formal, while dogs generally have very little interest in behaving with the same level of ceremony. A small dog beneath an enormous stone arch, or a dachshund marching down The Mall as though it belongs entirely to them, can make the photograph all the more memorable. The Mall is especially beautiful when the Union flags are flying, while Horse Guards gives us grand stone arches, open space and wonderfully strong London architecture. Trafalgar Square has its own rhythm again, with columns, steps and the movement of the city around it. There are pale stucco façades, beautiful doorways, black railings, quiet garden squares and streets where the architecture does much of the visual work before I have even lifted the camera. It suits a dog with a calmer presence particularly beautifully, one who can hold a composed moment against surroundings that already have so much character. One of the reasons I enjoy photographing dogs here is everything that exists between the more obvious locations. A patch of beautiful morning light across a doorway. A little mews tucked behind a much busier street. Steps, shopfronts, old brickwork and corners you could walk past every day without thinking twice about until the right dog is standing there. Not every photograph needs to announce London through a landmark. Sometimes the architecture, elegance and feeling of the street are enough to make the photograph unmistakably London. Cobbles underfoot, market architecture, old shopfronts, passages, flowers, cafés and colour in the background give it a genuine sense of a working, breathing part of London rather than somewhere created simply to become a photograph. It was one of the first places I photographed a dog in London, and I do not think I will ever stop falling in love with it. For some dogs, all that curiosity becomes part of the session itself. They want to look through doorways, investigate the market, watch people passing or follow a smell that has suddenly become far more important than anything I had planned. I am very happy to let that happen. Some of the photographs that mean the most are not the ones where everything went exactly as expected. They are the ones where a dog's character found its way into the frame. Covent Garden is particularly good at giving those moments somewhere beautiful to happen. And then Christmas arrives. The plane trees along its streets, ironwork balconies, warm brick, pale houses and quieter residential corners give a portrait warmth rather than pure grandeur. It is one of the reasons Chelsea can be such a natural choice when I am photographing not only a dog, but the people who belong beside them. Chelsea still feels very much like London, just in a softer way. The architecture is there around you without needing to be the whole photograph. I particularly love that for family portraits. The photograph can be about a hand resting on a dog's back, the way they look up at somebody they adore, everybody walking together or one of those completely ordinary gestures that means very little to anyone else and everything to the people within it. That doesn't make those photographs any less precious. They are everyday life with a dog, and I love them for exactly that reason. The trouble is that camera rolls are rather good at swallowing things. One photograph becomes ten, ten become hundreds, and the picture you took because you never wanted to forget it ends up somewhere between a screenshot of a restaurant menu, a photograph of the electricity meter and seventeen near-identical attempts at getting your dog to look at the camera. If your soul dog is known for a favourite bow, tartan coat or something wonderfully characteristic of them, that can become part of the story. Comfort remains the priority. Dogs should remain safely on lead throughout the session, and I photograph with this in mind from the beginning. The lead can be considered as part of the portrait while your dog’s safety, confidence and wellbeing remain central to the experience. For festive sessions, a little more colour can be beautiful. What I love most about this photograph is the little congregation in front of it. Stella, Duke, Rollo, Billy, Kiwi, Asha and Forrest gathered across the bridge, each with their own posture and expression, apparently quite unconcerned by the enormous dome behind them. I remember looking at them and thinking that somehow St Paul’s had become the backdrop. That became the idea behind this piece. Six dogs were photographed individually and brought together into one imagined rush through the City of London. Some appear to be walking with purpose, while others seem perfectly happy to take the commute at their own pace. Which, perhaps, makes it quite an accurate commute. What mattered to me was that each beloved dog still felt completely themselves. That is one of the things I love about photographing dogs in London. The city gives us architecture, history, light and an extraordinary sense of place, but the photographs become meaningful because of the soul dog and people within them. A glance towards their person beneath the arches of Mayfair, a familiar little lean against a leg on The Mall, or a family walking together through the City can turn a beautiful London setting into something deeply personal. As a London dog and pet photographer, I am always interested in that balance. I want the setting to feel unmistakably London, while the bond, character and relationship remain at the heart of the photograph. A confident dog may enjoy the scale and ceremony of The Mall, while a sensitive little soul may flourish somewhere with more space, fewer distractions and time to take everything in. I think about the dog as much as I think about the architecture. Their personality, confidence, age, movement, energy and comfort all influence where we go and how the morning unfolds. I also consider the amount of walking involved, the time of day, the atmosphere of the location and the kind of photographs their family would love to live with afterwards. Sometimes the most meaningful setting is wonderfully grand. Sometimes it is an at home photography session, where every corner already belongs to the dog and every familiar detail carries its own history. Places I had walked past hundreds of times began to reveal themselves differently once I started imagining a dog within them. Covent Garden became more than a piazza I knew well. I began noticing the symmetry, the changing light, the theatre of the architecture and the quieter corners that appear before the city properly wakes. Mayfair offers something entirely different. Burlington Arcade, New Bond Street and the elegant streets around St James’s bring polish, architecture and a wonderful sense of occasion. Then there is the scale of The Mall and Horse Guards, the unmistakable skyline around Westminster, and the beautifully ordered architecture of Bank, the Royal Exchange and Leadenhall Market. Each part of London has its own rhythm. What fascinates me is what happens when one little personality enters that enormous setting. A dachshund beneath monumental architecture. A soul dog standing perfectly composed on The Mall. A family walking through Mayfair together. A quiet glance exchanged on a street that, a few hours later, will be filled with people. The city gives me an extraordinary stage, but the dog changes the way I see it. Over the years, walking London with dogs and a camera has taught me to notice more: the light between buildings, reflections after rain, the geometry of a doorway, an empty pavement for only a few seconds, and the little pockets of stillness hiding inside one of the busiest cities in the world. Working as a London dog and pet photographer has taken me from private family commissions and quiet mornings at home to fine art portraits created amongst some of the city’s most recognisable streets and landmarks. Even after years working as a dog photographer in London, familiar places can feel completely different depending on the soul dog walking through them beside me. It is one of the reasons London dog photography continues to excite me. Both are wonderful. My approach is dog led and consent based, with their body language, confidence, comfort and willingness guiding what we create together. We can walk. Pause. Explore. Change direction. Take a break. Have a little negotiation involving cheese. Or simply spend a few quiet minutes allowing the dog to settle before carrying on. I have photographed puppies, senior dogs, nervous and sensitive dogs, dogs with limited mobility, large groups and dogs who remain safely on lead throughout their session. Each one has taught me something. The more comfortable a dog feels, the more their real character begins to appear. The familiar expressions. The little habits. The way they check in with their person. The things their family immediately recognise as them. That is what I am looking for. Years of working with dogs have taught me patience, respect and the value of paying attention to the individual in front of me. Around the City, places such as Bank, the Royal Exchange and Leadenhall Market can offer beautiful architecture while still giving us space to work thoughtfully at the right time of day. There is also every possibility that the best location is somewhere deeply familiar to them. A favourite street, the area around home, a much loved walking route or even an at home session can create photographs with a completely different kind of meaning, because the setting is already part of their story. For me, choosing a London dog photography location is about finding the place where the dog, their people and the surroundings all come together naturally. When that balance is right, the location becomes part of the memory rather than simply the backdrop.
