Christmas has always been my favourite time of year in London.
For a few wonderful weeks, the city seems to give itself permission to become a little more extravagant.
Shopfronts become tiny theatres, enormous trees appear where they have no business fitting, lights tumble across streets and even the corners I know by heart somehow feel new again.
And if your pup is a central part of your family, it seems only right that they should be at the heart of Christmas too.
After years of photographing beloved dogs throughout London during the festive season, I have discovered that some of the loveliest Christmas experiences are not necessarily the biggest or busiest.
Often, they are the quiet mornings before everyone else arrives. Wandering beneath the lights with your dog beside you. Stopping somewhere beautiful simply because you can. Watching London wake up together.
So, if you are looking for dog friendly things to do in London at Christmas, here are some of my favourite ways to make the season feel a little more magical with your soul dog beside you.
See London’s Christmas lights before the city wakes
London at Christmas feels completely different before most of the city is awake.
Covent Garden without the crowds is one of my favourites. The enormous Christmas tree towers over the piazza, decorations glow overhead and, every so often, you may even hear the sound of horses passing through before the streets begin to fill.
Mayfair has another personality altogether. Around Burlington Arcade and New Bond Street, Christmas feels grander and more theatrical, with beautiful displays turning an early morning walk into something quite extraordinary.
Chelsea brings a softer side to Christmas. Around Sloane Square and Duke of York Square there are lights, colour, cobbles and that unmistakable feeling of a neighbourhood dressed beautifully for the season.
And then there is the City. Around Bank, the Royal Exchange and Leadenhall Market, the architecture does much of the work. On a peaceful Christmas morning, it can feel almost dreamlike, particularly before the working day begins.
If you are looking for dog friendly Christmas lights in London, I would always recommend going earlier than you think you need to. You get all the beauty of Christmas London while giving your dog more space to enjoy it too.
It is better for them, and honestly, I think it is considerably more magical for us too.
Make the Christmas walk itself something to remember
One of the reasons I created Magical Merriment was because I loved these mornings so much.

A Christmas market can make a wonderful festive outing if your dog is comfortable around people, food, music and a little more bustle.
London has plenty of seasonal markets throughout November and December, with everything from independent makers and gifts to food, lights and festive entertainment.
I have even taken my own dog to Winter Wonderland before. We went on a weekday, right as the doors opened, and it was surprisingly peaceful compared with how busy it becomes later in the day. That early window made the whole experience far more enjoyable.
Dog policies can vary between markets and individual venues, so it is always worth checking before travelling.
Personally, I love visiting earlier where possible.
Walking through a Christmas market with your precious dog can be great fun, particularly before the crowds build and everyone starts moving in six different directions at once.

One thing photographing dogs has taught me is that they rarely care how much you manage to fit into one day.
They care that they are with you.
So choose one part of London and make a morning of it. Walk slowly. Stop for coffee somewhere dog friendly. Let them sniff. Look at the lights. Take photographs. Wander somewhere simply because it looks beautiful.
For a confident city dog, Covent Garden and Mayfair can work beautifully together.
For a dog who prefers a little more breathing room, the City on a quiet morning can feel completely different.
And if your dog is older, nervous or simply happiest somewhere familiar, Christmas does not have to mean central London at all. A favourite walk, a warm home afterwards and their favourite people may be exactly their idea of a perfect festive day.

I am asked every year which part of London I love most at Christmas, and the answer really depends on the dog in front of me.
Mayfair
Mayfair is where I would go for statement Christmas.
Burlington Arcade, New Bond Street and the surrounding streets bring elegance, elaborate decorations and an unmistakable sense of London luxury. It feels polished, theatrical and wonderfully extravagant.

Covent Garden
Covent Garden is all about theatre.
The enormous tree, piazza, decorations and surrounding architecture create a Christmas atmosphere unlike almost anywhere else in London.

Chelsea feels softer.
Around Sloane Square and Duke of York Square, Christmas is colourful and elegant while still retaining the feeling of a beautiful neighbourhood morning walk.
The City of London
The City is perhaps the unexpected one.
Bank, the Royal Exchange and Leadenhall Market bring scale, colour and architecture, while peaceful mornings can make the centre of London feel almost entirely your own.
Which location works best depends far more on your dog’s personality, confidence and character than their breed or size.

Although dogs are the faces most people associate with my work, Magical Merriment is open to cats and other much loved pets too.
Each session is planned around their individual personality, confidence and comfort.
A Christmas cat photography session in London would naturally be approached differently from photographing a dog happily trotting through Covent Garden. Every animal has their own pace, and I shape the experience around them.
The photograph matters, but enjoying the experience of creating it matters just as much.

The most useful piece of advice I can give is surprisingly simple.
Go earlier than you think you need to. Central London changes dramatically once shoppers, commuters and visitors arrive.
I photograph many of my Christmas sessions early because dogs have more space, their humans tend to feel more relaxed and some of London’s busiest locations can briefly feel remarkably peaceful.
Bring whatever normally helps your beloved dog feel comfortable. Their usual lead, favourite treats, water and something warm if they feel the cold are far more useful than trying to make the day overly complicated.
For safety, dogs should remain on the lead throughout. Beautiful photographs can still be created naturally, and their comfort and wellbeing always come first.
