Big Ben, Mayfair, Covent Garden, Chelsea and beyond each give a dog portrait a completely different feel. These are the London locations I return to most, and what I look for when choosing where to photograph a dog.

From the grand architecture of Bank to the steps of St Paul’s, the Square Mile offers one of London’s most distinctive settings for a dog portrait. A look at photographing dogs in the City, where centuries of history meet wonderfully individual characters.

Every dog is already treated like royalty at home. Along The Mall, with Union flags overhead and Buckingham Palace in the distance, the portrait has a setting to match.

We tend to assume there will be time for the proper photograph later. Later, when the house is tidier. Later, when he has recovered from the limp, or grown into his ears.

Later becomes a placeholder we never quite get around to filling.

Somewhere in your phone are thousands of photographs of your dog, taken because the moment felt worth remembering. A reflection on the photographs we keep, the ones we forget to look at, and why sometimes it is worth making one we get to see every day.

There’s something about the early morning in Westminster that feels almost untouched.
Before the crowds gather, before the rhythm of the city fully begins, places like Horse Guards Parade, Big Ben, and Buckingham Palace feel softer. More personal. As though, just for a moment, they belong only to those wandering through them.

There’s a certain calm in these early hours that many dogs naturally settle into, especially those who need a little more time or understanding. It’s something I’ve come to appreciate deeply through working with rescue dogs, where patience, softness, and trust shape everything.

The details.

The expressions.

The little habits.

The way they simply are.

These are the moments that shape our everyday lives, in ways that feel effortless and deeply familiar.

The love we share with our dogs is never long enough.

That’s why what we keep matters.

One day, this will be everything we have left.
