A Royal Dog Photoshoot: Portraits Along The Mall

Every dog is already treated like royalty at home.

They have the good side of the sofa. They are greeted before anyone else in the house, some mornings before the children are. It seemed only fitting, then, that somewhere in London, a dog should be photographed with a little of the grandeur they are already accustomed to at home.

The Mall does something no other stretch of road in London quite manages. Wide, red, flanked by the flying Union flags in perfect formation, running arrow-straight from Buckingham Palace to Admiralty Arch, it carries a sense of occasion before a single photograph is taken.

Early in the morning, before the crowds and the coaches, the light comes in low along its length and turns the whole avenue the colour of the road itself. It is, without exaggeration, one of the most theatrical backdrops available to any dog in the country.

A session here calls for a particular kind of patience, the same patience the location itself seems to demand.

Golden hour arrives early and does not linger. The best results come from working with a dog who is calm enough to hold a moment, or lively enough to be caught mid-stride against all that grandeur. Either can work beautifully, depending entirely on the dog in question.

This is part of what makes a shoot along The Mall so different from a park portrait or a studio sitting. Here, the location becomes part of the story the photograph tells. With the avenue stretching away, flags overhead and Buckingham Palace in the distance, even the most familiar little expression feels rather extraordinary. It is still unmistakably your precious dog, simply given a setting worthy of the way you already see them.

Buckingham Palace itself, glimpsed at the end of the avenue, adds a certain gravity without needing to dominate the frame. A dog does not need to be positioned directly in front of it to borrow some of its presence. Sometimes the palace works best as a suggestion at the edge of the photograph, a reminder of where you are, rather than the entire point of it.
