A Dog Photoshoot in the City of London

I am a bespoke dog photographer working across the City of London, including Bank and St Paul’s, creating photographs for families who want to hold onto something of the dog they adore, set against the history of the Square Mile.

The City of London is an odd, wonderful contradiction to photograph a dog in.

Within the same few hundred yards, you have a Wren cathedral and glass towers reflecting the sky in a way that changes by the hour. Few places in London hold that much contrast in such a small footprint, and a dog, weaving through the middle of it, has a way of making both halves of that contradiction feel suddenly personal.

Perhaps that is what I love most about photographing dogs here. However grand the surroundings, the photograph still comes back to someone you know completely: the little expressions, habits and character that make them yours.

Dog Photography at Bank

Bank, at the meeting point of half a dozen grand old buildings, offers something almost theatrical on a quiet Sunday morning.

The architecture around the junction was built to communicate permanence and confidence, and a dog photographed against it tends to borrow a little of both, whatever their actual temperament happens to be at home.

Some of my favourite portraits here are the ones where that contrast is allowed to remain: imposing architecture, an almost impossibly small dog in comparison, and all of their personality still managing to command the photograph.

There is a particular kind of photograph that only exists here, one part solemn, one part playful, entirely dependent on catching a dog's own personality against a backdrop that was never designed with dogs in mind at all.

St Paul’s works differently.

The dome has a way of drawing the eye upward, and the wide steps leading to it give a natural stage for a portrait that feels grounded rather than grand.

Early on a weekend morning, before the City becomes busy, the light across the stone can be beautifully soft, while the quieter surroundings give your dog plenty of time to settle into everything around them.

It can feel grand without the photograph needing to feel formal. Your precious dog is still very much themselves, with all the little expressions and quirks you know so well. St Paul’s simply becomes part of their London story.
